Step 1 of 6

What best describes your home?

Different buildings need different crews, so this is the first thing a roofer asks.

Free either way, and never more than three contractors.

Before the first day

Permit pulled, material delivered — usually to the driveway, sometimes onto the roof. Move cars, clear the drive, and take pictures off the walls upstairs.

Day one: tear-off

The loudest day. The old covering comes off, the deck is inspected, and any rotten sheathing is replaced at the rate agreed in the contract. This is the day the price can move, which is why that rate matters.

Day two: dry-in and covering

Underlayment, ice-and-water where required, drip edge, then the covering goes on from the eaves up. Flashings and penetrations are detailed as the crew reaches them.

Finishing

Ridge, ventilation, final flashing, then clean-up and a magnet run for nails. Walk it with the contractor before the final payment, and keep the paperwork.

Find out what it costs

No cost, no obligation, and never more than three contractors.
